ketchup ingredients

I thought it would be interesting to compare the ingredients that went into the two ketchups we tasted in class today.

First, Heinz:
  • Tomato concentrate from Red Ripe Tomatoes
  • Distilled vinegar
  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Corn syrup
  • Salt
  • Spice
  • Onion powder
  • Natural flavoring
There are a lot of question marks in that list.  What's the difference between high fructose corn syrup and plain old corn syrup?  What is "natural flavoring"?  What goes into the concentration process of these "red ripe tomatoes"?

Next, Sir Kensington's Gourmet Scooping Ketchup:
 \

  • Tomato paste
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Raw sugar
  • Onion
  • Honey
  • Olive Oil
  • Lime Juice Concentrate
  • Green Bell Pepper
  • Salt
  • Agave Nectar
  • Spices
Fewer questions.  But maybe not as satisfying as ketchup, anyway.  It's interesting, I think, that in this instance we generally prefer the product that we objectively like less.
